I’ve seen recipes for homemade puffy paint many times over the years, but I never took the time to make it with the kids until today.
What a shame I waited this long!
The kids had a blast and developed lots of ways to use it.
Even Harry Potter crests and pendants!
The original instructions were to mix one tablespoon self-rising flour, one tablespoon salt, food coloring and enough water to make a paste, once for each color.
Since I made up little cups for four different children (life is too short to listen to “Mom, Alex mixed all the colors into brown!” and “Hey! Victoria used all the red up!” all day!), I soon realized that it made much more sense to just mix up:
- One part self rising flour
- One part salt
- Enough water to make a paste
and THEN divide it into muffin tins or ice cube trays and add food coloring!
Either way, all you do is give the kids Q-tips or paint brushes and instruct them to dab it on cardboard.
We used recycled Priority Mail boxes for our canvases, cut into small squares. You want a nice sturdy canvas.
When the picture is finished, microwave it for about 10 seconds (we did 5 second intervals and occasionally needed longer for really thick and wet paintings).
All four kids had a blast using this stuff and they used it off and on the whole day and into the night.
I’ve been a fan of Liana’s paper dolls for years but I didn’t know she has a blog now where she (sometimes) offers a new free paper doll outfit every day. Look at just a few of her more recent offerings…
There are so many wonderful outfits! There are black and white princess dresses to color yourself, colorful replicas of outfits from classic old movies, fanciful fantasy wear, modern red carpet celebrity gowns, historic costumes and stylish every day clothes. I’m a fan all over again.
I know what we’re doing next time we’re stuck inside on a rainy day… 🙂
Magical Mama Kristie in Australia shared this sweet way to pass the time when you’re cooped up…
I had a suggestion for a rainy day thing to do – we did it today with my boys and watched old home videos – they were intrigued about themselves as babies…and felt very special being on tv! LOL!
It’s been a long time since we’ve gotten our old home movies out and it’s a great idea. Now if it would only rain…. 🙂
Well, we found a way to occupy ourselves this morning despite the rain!
I got out a can of shaving cream and invited the kids to spread it all over the table.
I read once that shaving cream was good for wood tables.
I personally think it’s highly unlikely
but my table is older than I am
and has frankly had way WORSE stuff on it than shaving cream
so it can’t complain!
The kids had a blast.
It got a wee bit messy!
And then somebody decided to climb onto the table!
Note: shaving cream is very slippery!
Alex slipped and slid like a wet fish and kept shouting whoaaaaaa! 🙂
I am terrible about saying things like
"Get down… as SOON as I take this picture!"
It was quite a mess but it cleaned up easily and it had us all in fits
of uncontrollable laughter.
And don’t rainy days just need a little uncontrollable laughter?
